Protect Yourself From Fraud

Protect Yourself From Fraud

Fraud Is Getting Smarter—So Must Consumers

Fraud today is more convincing than ever. Scammers use phone calls, texts, emails, social media, and even artificial intelligence to impersonate trusted businesses, government agencies, and financial institutions. Their goal is simple: create urgency, gain trust, and convince you to send money or share personal information.  The FBI reported more than $262 million in losses from account takeover scams in 2025, with over 5,100 complaints filed. These attacks commonly begin with phishing emails, fake text messages, or malicious links that trick consumers into entering login credentials.

At Sky FCU, we see how damaging fraud can be. It affects people of every age and income level. Retirees may face government impersonation scams; students may encounter fake job offers, and families may receive texts claiming a loved one is in trouble.

One common tactic is “spoofing,” where a scammer makes a call or text appear to come from your credit union or card provider. They may claim your account is compromised and ask for account details, passwords, or a transfer to a “safe account.”

Payment apps like Venmo, Cash App, and Zelle also create risk. These services work like cash—once money is sent; it is often gone. Fraudsters use fake online sales, rental listings, and emergency stories to pressure quick payments.

The best protection is simple: slow down.

If you receive a suspicious message, stop and verify. Contact your financial institution directly using the number on your card or official website—not the number in the message. Pressure to act immediately is often the biggest warning sign.

At Sky Federal Credit Union, we encourage members to trust their instincts. If something feels off, ask questions. A quick phone call can prevent major loss.

Here is the truth: legitimate financial institutions will never ask you to move your money to a “safe account.” They will never request your online banking password, secure access codes, or full debit card PIN over the phone, by text, or by email.

Fraud prevention is not about fear—it is about awareness. Scammers rely on panic. Your best defense is caution, confidence, and knowing when to pause.

Fraud is not just a financial issue—it is a community issue. When scams succeed, they impact families, businesses, and trust itself. As fraud tactics continue to evolve, so must our vigilance.

The good news is that awareness works. Education works. Conversations work.  Sky FCU is proud to be your financial partner in protecting your finances and our community against fraud.  Protecting your money starts with protecting your information. In today’s world, being financially smart also means being fraud aware.

Action Items to Prevent Fraud

  • Never share your online banking password, debit card PIN, or secure access codes by phone, text, or email.

  • Do not send money to a “safe account.”

  • Verify suspicious calls or texts by contacting your financial institution directly using the number on your card or official website.

  • Be cautious with payment apps and only send money to people you know and trust.

  • Monitor your accounts regularly and report unusual transactions immediately.

  • Set up account alerts for purchases, withdrawals, and login activity.

  • Use strong, unique passwords and update them regularly.

  • Turn on multi-factor authentication whenever available.

  • Enable biometric login features on your devices and apps.

  • Be careful with links in emails or text messages. When in doubt, go directly to the official website.

  • Talk with family members—especially seniors and young adults—about common scams and fraud warning signs.

  • If something feels urgent, suspicious, or too good to be true, pause first. Scammers rely on panic.

  • Set social media accounts to "private" to limit who can see your posts and personal information.

  • If a friend requests money or asks for sensitive information, contact them directly through a different channel (e.g., a phone call) to verify their identity.

  • Watch for Scams: Be skeptical of investment opportunities, particularly those offering high returns or using crypto/gift cards, and watch for AI-generated deepfakes of celebrities-social media platforms have very engaging and appealing videos/reels geared to draw you in.

  • Avoid posting real-time vacation updates, your full address, phone number, or other personal details, as these can be used for "social engineering".- The quizzes you see, that seem innocent are information gathering highways and you should avoid them.

  • Turn off geotagging photos and applications to prevent revealing your location to criminals.
